The Breakdown
Panda diplomacy is the only part of this sport with a real transfer market, and Japan just found out what it feels like to be on the wrong end of an expiring contract.
Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, twins born at Ueno in June 2021, flew to Sichuan on January 27, 2026, rejoining their parents and older sister. With them went Japan's last pandas. Adventure World in Shirahama had already sent four home in June 2025 when its own loan lapsed. For the first time in more than five decades, there is not a single giant panda in the country.
The send-off was extraordinary. Visitors queued up to three and a half hours in winter cold, wearing panda hats and waving flags. Coverage tied the timing to deteriorating relations between Tokyo and Beijing, which is the part that makes this a transactions story rather than a nature story.
Compare it with what happened three months later, when China agreed to send two pandas to Zoo Atlanta and signed a separate ten-year deal with Munich. Same lender, same asset class, very different terms depending on the relationship. Every panda in the world is a lease, and the leverage sits entirely on one side of the table.
